Resilience Enhancement in Tourism through Education and Skills
Strengthening the tourism sector’s ability to anticipate,
prepare for and respond to climate-related risks.
ABOUT RETES
Developing skills and
tools for a more resilient
tourism sector
Tourism in Europe is increasingly exposed to natural hazards and climate-driven crises such as wildfires, floods, heatwaves and storms. Many tourism operators—especially small businesses and rural destinations—lack the skills, tools and coordinated procedures needed to manage risks and respond effectively
during emergencies.
RETES is a Erasmus+ project that strengthens the capacity of tourism professionals to anticipate, prepare for and respond to climate-related risks through education, training and cross-sector collaboration.
OUR VALUES
Collaboration across sectors
RETES is built on the conviction that effective risk management in tourism requires strong cooperation between different sectors. The project brings together tourism professionals, vocational education and training (VET) providers, civil protection experts and local authorities to foster dialogue, mutual understanding and joint action.
By encouraging collaboration across disciplines and institutional boundaries, RETES helps create shared approaches to preparedness, response and recovery, strengthening the overall resilience of tourism destinations.
Practice oriented training
The project places a strong emphasis on practical, hands-on learning. RETES training materials are designed to respond to real challenges faced by tourism professionals, using concrete scenarios, applied methodologies and tools that can be directly transferred to daily professional practice.
This practice-oriented approach ensures that learning outcomes are meaningful, relevant and immediately applicable, supporting professionals in developing the skills needed to manage climate-related risks effectively.
Building resilience in tourism
At the core of RETES lies the objective of strengthening resilience within the tourism sector. The project supports tourism professionals in anticipating risks, preparing for potential disruptions and responding in a coordinated and effective manner when crises occur.
By enhancing knowledge, skills and cooperation mechanisms, RETES contributes to more resilient tourism destinations, better prepared to face climate-related challenges while ensuring safety, continuity and sustainability.
OUR OBJECTIVES
Skills development
As extreme weather events and natural hazards increasingly affect tourism destinations, professionals need to be equipped with the right competences to anticipate challenges, make informed decisions and respond appropriately in crisis situations.
Through targeted training activities and other initiatives, RETES aims to empower tourism professionals to understand risk scenarios, assess potential impacts and implement practical response measures within their daily professional context making more effective their cooperation with local DRM authorities in case of emergencies.
By investing in skills development, RETES contributes to a more resilient tourism workforce, capable of ensuring safety, continuity of services and sustainable destination management in the face of climate-related challenges.
Innovative training
RETES promotes innovative training approaches that combine digital technologies, interactive learning environments and immersive experiences to enhance skills development in the tourism sector. By moving beyond traditional classroom-based methods, the project enables professionals to engage with training content in a more dynamic, flexible and user-centred way.
The training model will integrate interactive learning modules, multimedia resources and video-based content to support different learning styles and professional needs. Through the use of simulations, visual scenarios and immersive 360º videos, learners can explore realistic risk situations, analyse response options and understand the implications of their decisions in a safe and controlled environment.
This innovative approach encourages active participation, experiential learning and continuous self-assessment, allowing tourism professionals to learn at their own pace while gaining practical insights that can be directly applied in real-life contexts.
European transferability
A core objective of RETES is to ensure that its results can be effectively transferred and adapted across different European contexts. The project training materials that will be developed will have a strong focus on flexibility, to be adjusted to the specific needs, risks and institutional frameworks of diverse tourism destinations.
RETES promotes a modular and adaptable approach, with a micro-credential approach to recognise and validate the skills acquired by the Tourist operators through the self-paced learning program.
Through transnational cooperation and the exchange of experiences among partners, RETES contributes to building shared knowledge and fostering a European perspective on resilience in tourism. This approach strengthens the project’s long-term impact and supports the integration of its outcomes into vocational education, professional training and policy frameworks at both local and European levels.
Key Activities
01 · Collaborative Action Plans
These action plans bring together tourism professionals and civil protection stakeholders to jointly analyse risks, define roles and improve coordination. Through collaborative workshops, RETES supports the development of shared strategies adapted to local contexts and real risk scenarios.
02 · Innovative Training Materials
RETES develops modern and flexible training materials that combine interactive content, multimedia resources and practical learning scenarios. These materials support active learning and help professionals acquire skills that can be directly applied in their daily work.
03 · Micro-credential System
The project introduces a micro-credential approach to recognise the skills acquired through training activities. This system supports transparency, motivation and lifelong learning by providing clear and transferable recognition of competences.
04 · Communication & Dissemination
RETES ensures that project results are widely shared through clear communication tools and dissemination activities. The website, visual materials and information packs support awareness-raising, knowledge transfer and long-term impact across Europe.
